Step Into Reading

Step 1 books are designed for the emergent reader. Text is extremely simple, with mainly one- or two-syllable words. Rhyme, rhythm, and repetition are often employed to engage new readers at this level. Books are thirty-two pages long. Grades Preschool-Kindergarten.

Step 2 books have more words per page than Step 1 books, but concepts and vocabulary are still basic. Again, rhyme, rhythm, and repetition are often employed at this level, and stories may involve a simple plot. Books are thirty-two pages long. Grades Preschool-1

Step 3 books have easy to follow plots and engaging characters. Perfect for children to read on their own as they tackle new words. Books are forty-eight pages long. Grades 1-3.

Step 4 books introduce readers to paragraphs and fully developed plot lines, though with short, punchy sentences. The pace is much quicker than in Step 3, and the vocabulary is increasingly challenging. Books are forty-eight pages long. Grades 2-3

Step 5 books are aimed at largely independent readers and even at older reluctant readers. Short, punchy sentences are still employed, although compound sentences occasionally appear and the level of suspense is high. Grades 2-4.
